Magazine Printing

Knepper Press is metropolitan Pittsburgh’s oldest and largest commercial printer. Our equipment and expertise are well suited to both long and short run magazine printing. Here are some basic questions to be considered when planning your magazine’s production. Their answers are important in the proper selection of paper, printing method and bindery/mailing/fulfillment options.

Some Questions About Magazine Printing

What is the usual number of pages?

Page count affects your choice of paper weight (thickness) and press and binding method.

What is your publication’s content?

Is it primarily text with a few illustrations or does it emphasize excellent photography and full page ads of luxury products or something else? For example, you might chose a very good grade of glossy paper for a magazine featuring excellent photography. On the other hand you could chose a lesser grade of matte finish or an uncoated paper for best legibility and economy in a publication emphasizing text matter. Are most copies mailed or are they distributed by other means? Total weight affects mailing costs so choosing lighter weight paper is usually more cost effective.
